play, rest and work in montgeneve

Located twenty minutes up the hill from Serre Chevalier on the Route Nationale to Italy it is a very small resort, blink and you'll miss it. However, in this instance the best things definitely do come in smaller packages.

300 days of sun appearing every year. Beautiful views, lots of trees, not huge queues for the lifts during the week (Italians tend to come across for the weekends so it gets busier then…but hey, that's the UK transfer days).

The location is fantastic, a well kept secret from boarders with good off piste and fantastic for skiers being so close to Sestriere and the Milky way. You can ski into Italy or go for lunch as it is only two kilometres down the road. For apres ski there is a choice of bars from smaller local hospitality to the larger, British run Le Graal bar with live music.

Bars and Clubs
Le Graal Bar - Largest Bar in town directly opposite the bottom of the hill. English pub style, live music and big apres ski.

Chaberton - Second largest Bar in town, typically French, karaoke and occasional live music

Roimanges - Equity run smaller English bar, often packed

Blue Night - Only night club in town, Typically French club, small, R&B music, the only place to go for a late night drink where everyone is drunk

Off-piste
Excellent off piste and excellent for snowboarders due to lots of chair lifts and telecabins and few drag lifts.

Moguls
Not many although normally a few on the red runs coming down the main hill to the heart of montgenevre
Back to top

Speed
Montgenevre is 1800 and you can get up to 2648 and back down to Montgenevre from there

Snowparks
None this year (2002-3) but are working on something for next year
Back to top

Events
Regular events organised by the promoter at the Tourist office including live music and theatre at either the town hall, in bars or on the hill. Weekly torchlit descent

Away Days
2 kms in one direction to Claviare in Italy and fifteen minutes in the other direction to Briancon or serre chevalier. There are organised away days to Ser Che, Deux Alpes and Sestriere.

Briancon being so local makes it easy to get out of resort with regular buses to prevent cabin fever and also retain some hard earned cash

Shopping
Not much choice, possibly the best would be Twinners, prices not too bad but better to go to Briancon which has everything.

Internet Cafés
One Cyber point in Tourist Office and one in Le Graal Bar, cost is that of a telecarte

Eating Out
Cadelsol or Transalpain

Mountain Restos
Two mountain restaurants- Les Anges and La Bergerie

McDonalds
10 to 15 minutes in Briancon!!!!!! Sad yet one of the finer points of Montgenevre

Work
Tour operators in resort-Neilson / Ski Utopia / Equity / Crystal / Thomson / Airtours and one French. Few large hotels, mainly chalets although only about 100 seasonaires in resort. Also ski shops etc although mainly French

Shopping Day
Most company chalet staff now have food delivered. There is a Sherpa although I would recommend Briancon as it has Geant, Champion and Ed

Transfer Day
Most transfers on Sunday through Turin about an hour and a half, very few delays. Some transfers through France on a Saturday. The only thing that would hold you down would be bad weather in Italy as they don't keep on top of the roads as well as they do in France

Après-ski Events
Apres ski is pretty big although it varies from one week to the next. The resort is so small that if you get a family week apres can be a sedate hot choccy drinkin' sesh with the folks or at the other end of the scale can be 300 people havin' it large on the Terrace of Le Graal dancing on tables and downing vin chaud.

Living
Staff accomodation usually pretty good as they are usually housed in apartments due to lack of large hotels.
