Always
a crowd pleaser, the Natives Workers Challenge
Big Air didn't fail to disappoint on Thursday, despite a thick blanket
of cloud that made jumping the huge kickers even more difficult.
With pine needles and fluorescent
spray the marshals managed to mark the takeoff and landing points
and the riders just had to trust to memory on the rest of the course,
much of the time. Gallery...
Big
Air, Big Hair
This year the Big Air was cunningly combined with the Comic Relief
'Big Hair' by Natives Reporter Alastair Vaan, who did most of the
organising and still found time to compete. Al said: "We wanted
to do something for Comic Relief anyway, and the coincidence of
names was too good to miss." Gallery...
While the judges decided on the final cut of riders to go into the
final of the main comp, the novice category was held on a smaller
kicker. As always with Natives races the emphasis was on inclusion
and the novices cheered each other on as much as the audience did.
Beats on the piste and men in tights
Prizes were also given out for the best costumes, some of which
looked to chilly even for a balmy Geordie Saturday night, never
mind the temperature on Rendl mountain which was well below -5.

Dj's played classic old school hip hop to the banks of onlookers
while the competitors unfurled their skills; and Simon, Jade and
the crew from Scotty's Bar, who also held the prize-giving and after-party,
handed out free drinks to all the riders courtesy of Eristoff and
their delicious flavoured vodkas.
