KAPRUN AVALANCHE

29 March 2000

The dangers of backcountry skiing were emphasised today as the total number of skiers killed in a Kaprun avalanche yesterday rose to 11, with a further four injured.

Reports indicate heavy rainfall in the area was the main cause of the instability of the 150m long ridge that gave way.  The group of trainee instructors and two snowboarders who had followed them were almost instantly covered.

The alarm was raised quickly by a woman who survived the fall and called for help on her mobile.  However, for the victims, the 300-strong rescue party including over 50 helicopters, arrived too late for the victims.

With the heavy and wet snow falling on a warming base, anyone going backcountry must show caution.  For more information on how to avoid being caught in an avalanche, and what to do if you are, please check our feature page 'Understanding Avalanches'.
