SUPERVISION FOR CHALET GIRLS SEEMS LIKELY

1 March 2000

In the light of a recent survey showing that 28% of parents would not let their daughters become chalet girls, Natives wonders for the future of the industry.

'Fly-on-the-wall' documentaries and articles in the press (such as last week's Daily Mail 'Sex and Chalet Girls' feature) have not helped the reputation of workers and have made it more difficult for operators to attract enough girls from well-bred backgrounds.

One parent was reported to have said, 'There is no way I would let a daughter of mine stay in a ski resort without supervision.'

Natives learns that one medium-sized company plans to tackle this problem by employing 'minders' in the hope that this will reassure parents.  The older and more responsible minders will work with younger girls and accompany them on any après-ski events, making sure they meet their 10pm curfew.  They would also ski with them in the day, making sure they stay mainly on green and blue runs.

An unnamed source told Natives they expect the new scheme to be a great success:  'Our costs will increase of course, but we should save that in money previously spent on flying pregnant staff home.'
