NIGHT-MAYOR IN MERIBEL...

3 February 2000

Reporting direct from Méribel, Natives has heard some dangerous rumours of more difficulties caused by the town's mayor.  After various criticisms last autumn of the 'lager lout' tendencies of British workers, he continues to make life difficult for locals.

Top of the list is the recent decision to ban coaches from stopping at certain spots on transfer day.  As of the last two weeks, tour operators have been obliged finish transfers by minibus.  Cynics have suggested that this novel idea may be inspired by upmarket neighbour Courchevel, which operates a similar scheme.

Less well publicised is the decision to limit the great British choice of fast food.  Whether for aesthetic reasons or otherwise, Tuck In, the famous snack establishment has been prevented from opening their new town centre location.

Offers to close at 9pm to avoid 'late night shenanigans' have been declined.  It has been suggested that the mayor is keen to clear the streets as quickly as possible once the bars have closed.

Could this be, Natives wonders, related to the fact that he lives just opposite - a fact that has always prevented any late opening of bars in the area.
