This Saturday Coronet Peak will be the second snow sports area
in Australasia (Mt Hutt which opened last
weekend was first) to open its slopes for the 2005 winter season.
Temperatures keeping low
Natural
snowstorms and ideal snowmaking conditions over the past three weeks
has resulted in the best opening conditions for several years, according
to ski area manager Duncan Smith. "It's been a dream run to opening
and a perfect weather forecast means we are hopeful of a fantastic
opening day."
"People will find many of their favourite runs open. The M1, Donkey
Serenade, Mid Gully, Wall Street, and the Shirtfront all have an
excellent early season base of 30 to 50 cm with limited off trail
skiing and riding."
The weather forecast for the weekend is for clear blue skies, relatively
mild temperatures and light winds for both Saturday and Sunday,
it's promising to be a fantastic start to what is shaping up to
be a great season.
New for 2005 season
The Burton Learn to Ride programme for learner boarders is on offer
for the first time in the Southern Lakes, using equipment and an
instruction progression especially designed to make learning easier
and faster.
The brand new Greengates Express six seater chairlift is scheduled
to open later in June as the snow base builds and further slopes
and trails are progressively opened.
"We're opening with twice as much terrain as is typical for this
time of year, and with a very positive weather outlook we expect
to be able to open more slopes soon," said Mr Smith.

and snow reports.
