COMPANY CHAIRMAN RESERVES COURCH PISTES

18 March 2005

Samsung chairman Lee Kun-hee has canceled a business trip to Europe over security concerns after the international press reported he booked a whole upscale ski resort. A Samsung official said the company's European subsidiary had advised Lee to cancel the trip, after news of the plans were leaked.

Courchevel slopes reserved
News agencies earlier reported Lee had reserved three slopes for himself at Courchevel in the French Alps. Claude Fauvre, the director of Three Valleys, the firm that manages the slopes and lifts in the area, said the Samsung chairman would visit the ski resort for a seminar hosted by the group and booked three slopes for exclusive use for three weeks.

Plans scuppered
But the reports have scuppered his plans. Since chairman Lee enjoys skiing, Samsung's European branch reserved the ski slopes in advance. It seems that the French ski resort told news companies in order to make commercial hay of Lee's planned visit and advertise the resort, the Samsung spokesman said. It had not been decided whether Lee would go to the ski resort, he added.

(That's taking wanting quiet pistes to the extreme! Let's hope his entourage had remembered to book use of a lift too... - Ed)
