VAL D'ISERE UPDATE

30 December 2003

Yikes! Well I haven’t written a Val update for a little while. It’s really not my fault…there’s just been too much going on…

Beaujolais Nouveau night
The memory loss all started with an evening back in November...having been invited out to a quiet dinner at a friend’s house it then went swiftly downhill with the realisation that it was Beaujolais Nouveau night and along with the entire inter-season population of Val d’Isère we ended up in the Perdrix… hmmm carnage… but if you are going to spend the Beaujolais Nouveau night in France then I can’t think of anywhere better to be!

Singing Christmas Trees!
Undoubtedly the best addition to Val d’Isère this season are the singing Christmas trees.. don’t believe me ? Walk past the Taverne d’Alsace or hang out in the Tourist Office square and you will hear them… although ever since the students one doesn’t sing any more!

Marmottes!
You can always set your diary by the reappearance of the Marmotte Times. Just as the resort starts to get a little busier, copies start to appear. This year it is bigger and better than ever before … this does however mean that there is more space to fill which, in turn means that if you are being naughty there is a bigger chance that you will feature. You have been warned! [Ed. watch out for that Marmotte gossip appearing regularly on Natives]

Students!
This however was nothing compared with the carnage that the annual invasion of students brought… I think Val has just about recovered now.

Fashion!
Over in Tignes Evolution 2 held their annual Fashion Show last Friday. This event gets better & better every year and this year there was the addition of a grand prize draw & many people walked off with great early Christmas presents including skis, snowboards and loads of new clothes.

Food!
In food land we also have a couple of new developments...the Melting Pot is no longer and is replaced by the ‘Bistrot des Cimes’, this new restaurant is under the control of the former manager of La Luge (the restaurant of the Hotel Blizzard) so as expected it is pretty top notch food and amazing service too. The Petit Danois has also extended its catering operation and Fats is now in charge of their new restaurant, well worth a visit. The refurbishment of the Canyon is now complete, making it a much bigger venue… anyone thinking of visiting the Canyon WATCH OUT FOR THE ELEPHANT BEER…don’t say that I didn’t warn you.

The Lodge & the Perdrix Blanche continue to be favourites among both visitors and seasonnaires alike while if you are looking to go somewhere a little bit different then try one of my favourites, the Casa Scara, a fantastic Italian in the old village.

And if you fancy a banquet but don’t fancy dining out then contact Altifood. Brand new for this year, Altifood is the baby of Pat, the former chef at the Melting Pot, and can cook whatever you wish and take it to wherever you want.

Drink!
As for bars, the season started officially when the Moris had its opening night. Their infamous toffee vodka seemed to make the night go with a bang. The Pacific Bar has reinforced its position as the only hangout for all you footie, rugby, in fact anything with a ball fans. Now with massive wide screen TV’s, you can catch all the major sporting action from around the globe without even having to move from your barstool.

The Saloon has firmly established itself as THE place for après ski in Val. Not only do they serve massive massive beers but they even have a ski/board valet parking arrangement so that your kit does not get pinched!

The bar in Precision has reopened this season with the development centre’s Dougie in charge. Being located right next to the changing rooms comes in pretty handy, not only will he serve you a mean G&T but he is also pretty honest when it comes to answering the time old question ‘Does my bum look big in this?’

The only other bar I’m going to mention is Victors...whether you need to have Sex on the Beach or just enjoy a Slippery Nipple this is the place to be, especially at happy hour…and who needs to eat when you’ve got Victor’s Bloody Marys!?

Lastly, but by no means least, congratulations to two of the ‘boys in black’. Directors of The Development Centre, Giles and Paul will both be getting married next summer. Not to each other I hasten to add but to Alex & Kate…lucky boys! And a big welcome to one of Val’s most recent arrivals, baby Sebastian Luca arrived on the 15 December, and will be celebrating his first Christmas along with the other, slightly older, new arrivals Zack & Maja.

Merry Christmas and here’s to a great 2004!
