'Snowsports not expensive'
A new survey from Snowlife, a campaign to increase participation in skiing and snowboarding, suggests that the UK winter sports retail industry is worth around £420 million a year.
The survey apparently found that a majority of the UK market is
made up of those with an annual income of less than £20k, which
Snowlife suggest proves that snowsport is not an expensive or elitist
pastime.
More skiers than boarders
While skiing still the most dominant snow sport, age analysis suggests
this balance will change over the coming years, with 41% of snowboarders
under 25, compared to just 22% of skiers.
There was, however, a small increase in the proportion of under 25s taking up skiing. This is widely accredited to the new freeskiing movement and carving skis.
Snowboard sales strong
With more than one million active participants, it is no surprise that the UK snowsport retail market is extremely healthy.
Of the £420 million spent on snowsports related products, software and accessories accounted for £389 million, with hardware (skis, snowboards, boots, bindings etc) racking up around £31 million.
Sales of ski boots in the UK came in highest at 53,421, skis sold 32,888, snowboards followed hot on their heels with 20,212.
It should be noted that overall ownership amongst UK snowsport participants
will be significantly higher as these numbers do not include purchases
made overseas.
