VAL D'ISERE OPENING DAY

01 December 2003

It never rains but it pours
Having been assured that the roads were clear we set off for Meribel on Thursday morning. It started raining just past Reims, and snowing when we got to Lyon. Needless to say the last part of the journey was rather hairy, but chains on we crawled up the mountain and made it to La Taverne in time for last orders.

The next day was grey and cloudy again, more snow and much bustling around town as the new staff arrived, shiny and co-ordinating in their new uniforms. La Poste opening that night led to severe carnage and wandering home in the snow around 2am. But it was worth the hangover to wake up to this...

Blue sky, fresh powder
Well, it was tough, but someone had to do it. In the spirit of research I headed over to Val d'Isere for the first day of the season and shared the Solaise area with about three other people, in glorious sunshine - magic.

All systems are go
It looks like things might be gearing up for a monster season in Europe, all the signs are good. Many other resorts are opening over the next few weeks and if the snow quality is anything like I experienced in Val on saturday then it's going to be a whole heap of fun.
Bring it on!
