SCOTLAND IN MOURNING

01 December 2003

Scotland is today in National mourning (Ed: no, it's nothing to do with the rugby!), with the news that Glencoe Ski Centre, 48 years old, is not to open for the coming winter season. As the closest of our 5 resorts to our, Glasgow, it is a very disappointing prelude to the winter season before it has even started!

Lack of tourism leads to closure
Poor snowfall in recent seasons and the lack of summer tourist activities provided at the centre have sealed its fate for this year. The natural terrain, stunning views and cozy nature of Glen Coe will be sorely missed. For those of you who never visited, it might have been hard to be impressed by the one-man chair lift (Cliffhanger), its single black run and t-bar lifts, but I for one have had great days up there over many years.

As I write, snow is lying on the Scottish highlands after another pre-season fall. So, ironically, a good season looks in store for our other ski centres.

Bleak yet bracing
Scottish skiing ranks lowly alongside its big mountain competitiors but consider this. Being brought up skiing on the windswept, icy slopes of Scotland means that when that chance to hit the continental mountains comes round the blue sky and powder days mean that much more!
