NORWEGIAN CHAMPION INJURED

22 October 2003

Broken ankle
Norwegian Kjetil Andre Aamodt, a three-time Olympic skiing champion, badly injured his right leg in a training run crash at Solden which could threaten his career.

The 32-year-old Aamodt was flown by helicopter to the Innsbruck university clinic with a broken right ankle and was operated on late Wednesday afternoon. The clinic confirmed that he would not be able to compete for the rest of the 2003/04 season.

Olympic Gold
Aamodt has won 12 medals overall at world championships - an all-time men's record - and seven more, including three gold, at the Olympics. He was preparing for the World Cup season which starts this weekend when he flew off the icy course.

Austrian slalom ski racer Kilian Albrecht said Aamodt had injured knee ligaments and his Achilles tendon during slalom training.

Aamodt, who suffered concussion when he fell during a World Cup downhill at Bormio in Italy last December, is hoping to carry on to the 2006 Winter Games in Turin.
