European World Cup opener
Earlier worries about snow conditions at Soelden, Austria, were
put to rest at the next stage of the Nokia
Snowboard World Cup last weekend on the Rettenbach Glacier.
Recent cold and wet weather have set up the historic resort with
solid conditions for the parallel giant slalom and the first parallel
slalom of the season.
Grabner takes lead in snowboarding
World champion snowboarder Siegfried Grabner won the slalom in his
home country Sunday to take the lead in the World Cup standings.
Grabner beat Italy's Roland Fischnaller and added to his second-place
finish Saturday. Alex Maier, the brother of ski star Hermann Maier,
was third in the Slalom.
Canadian snowboarder Jasey-Jay Anderson captured bronze in the Parallel
GS event, with a combined two-run time of one minute 9.99 seconds
in qualifying. "I am really excited about the way I am riding,"
said Anderson, who also won a bronze in Chile last month. "I put
together four of the best runs in the semifinals and finals that
I have had in a long time. Any time you reach the podium it is great
feeling, and finishing third means you only lost once, which is
as good as second."
Ursula Bruhin won the women's event, defeating Daniela Meuli in
an all-Swiss final. Doresia Krings of Austria leads the women's
World Cup standings, followed by Meuli and Bruhin.
New gate causes problems
The FIS debuted a new start system in Soelden's PGS, and many riders
had problems. All riders got a demo with the new start gate on Friday
"and everyone seemed to have it figured out," said U.S. alpine head
coach Nick Smith. "Before yesterday, nobody had ever seen that type
of gate before - it opens slower and a lot of riders barged them
when trying to nail their timing. If you go early, they make you
pay because there is no give if you jump."
