WOMAN SKIS DOWN EVEREST

6 October 2003

Good weather and cooler temps
Maegan Carney, on a quest to become the first woman and first American to ski from the top of Mount Everest, is keeping her skis close to her as the weather holds out for her summit attempt.

'As it's turned out, it's been a beautiful fall day. Clear weather throughout, we can see snow moving off the ridges up very high meaning the winds are here. Cooler temperature, the Icefall was not nearly as hot as it's been before. And I'm really proud to say that the entire team are at Camp 2, at about 20, 800 feet.'

Dispatches frmo the team say that the Lhotse Face "looks way ski-able this season," and that Carney has been scoping her lines and getting some climbing and turns in.

Listen to your instincts
It's a good thing the two time former World Extreme Ski Champion keeps has decided to keep her boards with her at all times as earlier in the week an avalanche completely obliterated a gear cache higher on the mountain.

' I had told Maegan she should leave her skis there and we could get them later and move them on to Camp 2,' wrote Berg, a colleague. 'She thought about it but she said, 'You know, I just feel better keeping my skis on me.' And she carried her skis back down to Camp 1.

Her skier's and mountaineer's instinct that said "Keep those skis!" was vindicated. She had no rational reason not to leave them that day but she just felt better taking them back to Camp 1, and still has her skis. A Nikon camera, 20 rolls of film, a down suit and some other items are under that debris. It remains to be seen whether they are found sometime later this season.
