BIG NAMES AT THE BHAM SHOW

09 September 2003

As we gear up for the British Ski & Snowboard Show, the first of the autumn's shows, news in of some big names in the snowsports world to supplement the action in the Natives Freestyle Zone.

Lesley McKenna
Lesley McKenna is the UK's top competitive snowboarder - our only Olympian and recently the first Briton ever to win a World Cup event, taking the gold medal at the Halfpipe World Cup in Japan.

Lesley is aiming towards the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin. In the meantime, Lesley is set to become a familiar face on our screens this autumn on 'Superstars', the BBC sports challenge show.

You can catch up with Lesley on the Visit Scotland stand.

Graham Bell
The former Olympic skier and Grandstand presenter Graham Bell will be challenging skiers at the show to have a go on the Skier's Edge, the technical ski conditioner used by the world's best skiers.

After four years as Performance Director for the British Ski & Snowboard Teams, Graham Bell has switched from training British Olympic athletes to a new challenge "tackling the physical fitness of the average British skier."

The British Ski Team has two machines permanently based in its Olympic training centre in Austria and now for the first time the Skier's Edge will be available to the British public. Visitors to the show will be able to test the machines, and take up the challenge to beat Graham's time.

Andrew Cooney
Andrew Cooney successfully completed his World Record attempt to become the youngest person to walk to the South Pole earlier this year. The 730 mile journey took 53 days during which time Andrew skied and dragged his sledge weighing 180lbs for up to 9 hours a day, enduring temperatures as low as minus 52C and altitude sickness at heights over 9,000ft.

Visitors to the show will have the chance to hear how he survived the extreme conditions and ask questions at his talks which will take place twice a day at the show.
