Saturday 31 May 2003 saw the hottest day of the year so far, an
ideal day for relaxation, sunbathing, the odd beer etc. Not for
150 people, this was the time to put on their protective clothing
and bake…. yes it was time for the Gloucester Club National.
Three timed runs
The National format chosen was the three timed runs down the same
course, the best time of two runs taken in the morning, going forward
to be added to the time taken in the afternoon. The 13 gate course
was set by Gloucester Coach Hedley Beavis and proved to be a course
set for exciting “down to the wire” ski racing.

Close competition
In the Mini Girls Emily Evans showed her class in taking Gold, Freya
Clarke Silver and local girl Francesca (Franny) Ball Bronze. Mini
Boys was again closely contested with Thomas Kirton taking Gold,
Jake Williams Silver and local boy Tom Walsh taking Bronze.
In the Womens race it could not be
have been tighter with the result not decided until the very last
skier had finished the course. The result in in the end going in
favour of Gloucester skier Rowan Vernon by 9/100’s of a second over
another local, Slalom Plus’ Stephanie Ovenden, Bronze going to Christine
Finley of Wycombe.
The Mens race again was a close run affair with Ben Hall (Arrows)
winning by 8/100’s of a second over Cardiff’s Simon Kilday and Exeter’s
Colin Armstrong; both tying for 2nd place.
