MAN NOT LOST, JUST LUCKY

10 June 2003

The big incident over the weekend in Mt Buller, Australia, was an air and ground search for a man reported missing overnight after he left Kooroora nightclub shortly after midnight.

Searching through the night
Police said about 40 people were involved in the search for the 24-year-old man from the Melbourne suburb of Rowville.

The search was called off after he returned to his lodge just before dawn. He had spent the night at another lodge after "getting lucky".

Season looking good
Up to 60cm of snow had fallen since last week, with sunny skies and little winds over the past few days bringing on ideal skiing conditions. "It's been a dream start, probably the best start we have had since the year 2000" said Ian Talbot from Falls Creek in Victoria.

Fresh snowfall lured crowds to the opening weekend of what is shaping up to be a bumper ski season at NSW and Victorian snowfields. Resorts have reported forward reservations were up with skiers and snowboarders choosing to stay in Australia rather than travel overseas.

Bumper bookings
Bookings in Falls Creek are up about 30 percent, and 40 percent in Thredbo in the NSW Snowy Mountains, which is largely put down to dramas abroad and fear of foreign travel. In contrast, only six months ago, resorts such as Thredbo and Mt Hotham in Victoria were under threat of bushfires, and the summer tourism period was severely affected.
