ALPE D'HUEZ ATTACK

18 April 2003

French yobs beat up Brits

The British newspaper 'The Sun' has claimed that four British snowboarders were 'viciously beaten up' by local yobs in Alpe d'Huez because of the war in Iraq. The group were walking home from a night out when four French lads pulled up beside them in a car and jumped out waving baseball bats. They called them “English pigs” and then began the attack.

Civil engineer Dan Ready, 27, from Ashford, Kent, was knocked unconscious and suffered a fractured skull and swelling to the brain. Jason Reid, 29, who works with him, had his nose smashed. Jason’s 24-year-old fiancée Keely Baxter was bruised as she tried to protect her friends. Another member of the group, who does not want to be named, suffered a broken collar bone.

Possible political resentment
The group, on a ten-day trip to Alpe d’Huez, were treated at a local hospital before flying back to Britain on Tuesday. Jason, from Bishop’s Stortford, Herts, said: “I am certain they attacked us because of the bad feelings between the French and the British over the war in Iraq.

“I have been to the same resort several times but this time it was very different. Everywhere we went, people would ask us whether we supported the war once they found out we were British.”

"It was a terrifying attack. We had been on our way home from this night out when the French lads pulled up and jumped out with the baseball bats. They went mad. They spat at us, called us English pigs, attacked us then drove off. I don’t really have an opinion on the conflict, but I support the boys that are doing their jobs out there.

“This was more than a bit of trouble in the street. “We were subjected to an horrific attack because we were English and our troops are out in Iraq.” The British lads did not report the attack to police.

Or did they ask for it?
The fact that the lads did not report the attack to the police could have be pertinent. It has been suggested in the Chat Room that they suffered their pasting because they set out to start trouble at Captain Sandwich. So it could be that the whole war angle is just a ruse (to help them sell their story?). Whether or not they merited a baseball bat in the head is another issue...

Previous situation
Violence in ADH is not something new. last season a bar owner was kidnapped as he was walking home after locking up for the evening. His four assailants took the cash he had on him, took him back to the bar and forced him to give them the contents of the safe and then dumped him, blindfolded, out of the car in Bourg d'Oisons.
