Andy Bennet makes his mark
Young ripper Andy Bennet (19) has made an indelible mark on the
freestyle scene this winter, with a combination of results in Europe
and North America.
Andy (British Freestyle Ski Team, Line Skis and Fat Face) was the
top ranked British skier in the ChamJam Big Air comp with 6th place
as well as competing for the 3rd placed Chamonix team in the "Natives
Boss des Bosses" bumps comp.
Andy told Natives "I got 6th place in the Big Air with a cork 7
and a 180. The 180 was pretty scary because it was probably the
biggest jump I have ever hit! There were some nasty slams too!"
Ride second place
He topped this off with a superb 2nd place in the slopestyle at
the Verbier Ride only being beaten by Australian
Skier Ben Murphy of London Ski show fame. Andy again: "The guy who
won, "Skinner", had a sick run with a cork 9 off the top jump and
some super tech rail slides. I 180'd the big jump to get 2nd, so
I was super stoked."
Last week both Andy and 17 year old Tom Last (Line Skis, Smith)
both gained fantastic top 15 finishes (12th and 14th respectively)
in half pipe at the 2003 Freestyle World Junior Champs in Canada
- the first time half-pipe has featured at the championships. Hopes
had been high for Andy as he had previously won and come second
in two of the US qualifiers for the champs.
Sheffield lads
Both Andy and Tom have come through the Sharks Ski Club Freestyle
programme at Sheffield Ski Village. Sheffield not only has a syhthetic
half pipe , it has bumps and jumps as well as a water ramp for invert
training.
Andy now finishes his season with the Europa Cup final in Andorra
featuring Bumps, Skier X, Half Pipe and Big Air along with the rest
of the British and English Freestyle Ski Teams.
