CHATEL UPDATE

24 December 2001

Desperately trying to score some sprouts...

"Vive La Neige!" as my new best friend the fruiterer said to me yesterday as I desparately tried to score some sprouts. Yes, finally after a week of perfect blue skies, starry starry nights and absolutely no bloomin' snow, Chatel finally received its Premier Neige on Saturday.

More lifts are coming into operation every day. Presently the Super Chatel bowl is open, but is not yet linked up to Torgon or Morgin. Pre la Joux is now linked to Avoriaz where the skating is reported to be superb and La Linga opens on Christmas Eve. OK, so the conditions are not exactly perfect, but it is early and Chatel is relatively low.

On the lower slopes the snow cannons are working overtime and the lack of crowds at both Super Chatel and Pre la Joux, coupled with the nice condition of the snow there, make for a very pleasant boarding experience.

Local folklore has it that the later the snow comes, the longer and better the season overall and we're all taking great comfort from that. And let's be honest, who wants to know that there's two metres of untouched powder out there whilst we're up to our eyes in turkey? Save it for January!
