CHATEL UPDATE

3 January 2002

"What has the European Union ever done for us…?
"

So finally the Christmas and New Year madness is over and we can take a breather, get up the mountain and actually do what we came here to do.

For the benefit of saisonnaire virgins, this is not, I repeat, NOT, shopping and cooking. Whatever your experiences so far or head office might have led you to believe…

The Christmas snow has lasted quite well and thanks to the extreme cold is continuing to provide a nice surface to board on, although it's getting somewhat patchy in places. To be honest we could do with another metre or so, but having spoken to people in other resorts we do realise we are relatively fortunate here. Who would've thought that little ol' Chatel would have more snow than Chamonix? The only runs closed at the moment are those down to the villages, although if we don't get some more snow in the next couple of days, which is not looking likely, that may be about to change.

* * *

Truly, the gods give with one hand and take away with the other. Just as we start to look forward to the New Year crowds leaving, getting the slopes back to ourselves and maybe even finding a parking space in town, they go and land this new currency on us.

Living as we do, on the French/Swiss border, we can barely contain our joy at having yet another currency to deal with. Yes, the Euro has been welcomed with a huge wave of indifference, although the 30 minute queue at the cashpoint tonight did indicate that it has possibly come as a bit of a surprise to some people. French Francs are still being accepted until 28 Feb, but bars and shops are giving change in Euros and it is definitely now the 'main' currency.

I personally welcomed the Euro to the world by exchanging some of mine for a new pair of Burton 2002 freestyle bindings. Four months worth of pure, unadulterated fun, and for less than £70, a bargain in any currency...
