LES DEUX ALPES REPORT

24 January 2002

The next person to tell me it'll snow at the next full moon is going to be...

I haven't been in touch for a while because I was waiting for an enormous snowstorm so I could rave about amazing powder runs. Alas, I hate to say it but the snow is rubbish.

The glacier is as good as ever but the rest of the slopes are screaming for some more. Runs are open down to resort, but people who are trying to ski right down are having to remortgage their houses to pay for all the P-Tex needed to repair the scrapes in their skis and boards. There are absolutely loads of rocks peeping through at around the mid station and below. Although to be fair the glacier is plenty of fun and the fun-park is still absolutely superb.

Personally I have now gone on strike and I'm not going up until it snows. Hopefully that'll be soon but I have stopped listening to the weird and wonderful forecasts are available in resort. The next person to tell me that it will snow when we next have a full moon is going to be dragged up the glacier by their ears and thrown straight into the first available crevasse.

Around the Bars

One thing that you can be absolutely sure of is that snow or not, the atmosphere in the evenings here is never going to let you down. Smokey Joe's is already established for amongst other things, a rather top 70's night every Tuesday and also for being THE place to come to for breakfast. In this strange land of bread and cheese to start the day, Smokeys can set you up with a full English that is guaranteed to begin the hangover repair process.

The Secret Bar has a a rather novel (and brilliant) way of keeping the punters coming back in. They give you Secret dollars everytime you buy a drink and then on Thursday you take all your dollars in for the auction. Every week they have summer holidays and a wicked snowboard up for grabs.

Unfortunately season workers are exempt. Shame really cos I reckon I could have amassed about $500,000 by March. At The Secret they now also have a resident band with a rather good array of tunes in their repertoire. I have even seen them successfully perform a song that they didn't know the other day to tumultuous applause. That's dedication for you.

My other recent haunt has been Corrigan's the Irish Pub. It seems to always have an excellent (and insane) atmosphere. They have theme nights on Tuesday and are hilarious. The last 2 weeks have seen "Grannies & Trannies" and "Australian Night".

Also I have to mention something else that I was lucky enough to catch at Corrigan's this week. As some of you may know, much of the music to be heard in the Alps is of the cheesy, wedding reception type. So it was nearly with tears of joy that I discovered that Corrigan's had booked a live band called Edge. They were absolutely wicked and had some top line tunes to play as well. The great shame is that they've now headed of to St Etienne and aren't staying in the Alps although they did tell me they will be back around february. If you get a chance to see these guys then do and even better, if you own a bar in the Alps, book them up.

Anyway, enough of this otherwise, I'll be accused of starting a fanzine for them and I'm far too lazy for that. I'm off to sacrifice prunes to the snow gods. Something has to work.

Later
