SKI CLUB SNOW COVERS MOTORWAY

12 December 2002

An Austrian ski club has turned up at their practice slope to find strong winds have blown all their artificial snow onto a nearby motorway.

Man made snowdrifts for five km
More than five kilometres of the main arterial A1 Westautobahn, between St Georgen and Schoerfling, close to the German border, was covered in man-made snow drifts and ice patches.

The A1 is the busiest of the Austrian motorways and the snow from the club's artificial snow machine that had been blown off course resulted in hour-long delays for drivers near the Alpine city of Salzburg.

Plans to move snow machine tharted
Authorities are now discussing with the club owners about plans to move the snow machine to another location, but so far their requests have been turned down.

The local district council said that they might try making the club pay for the clean up operation so that they change their attitude about relocating the snow machine.
