If you don't know the Chamjam by now, then where have you been? This essential winter event takes place 4-8 March this year and with self-styled 'Big Air, Big Beats and Big Peaks' should be as large as ever. .

(c) Camelia LiparotiThe seamless blend of snowboarding, skiing and music melted together into five days of mountain party in Chamonix is one of the major highlights of the season. Now in its sixth year, the Chamjam has effortlessly grown into one of the most respected and innovative competitions in Europe, showcasing some of the finest talent in snow sports, set to a soundtrack of the fattest music around.

Both pros and amateurs will star alongside each other in the other events, which feature a world standard course for both Boarder X and Skier X and a monster Big Air, designed to bring out the best in current snowboarding and skiing. The Jib Jam is a slopestyle contest with kickers and rails, where riders are judged similar to a half pipe on their amplitude and difficulty. [Rider Update]

With jaw dropping technical and freestyle manoeuvres, this year the Big Air is even more likely to bring out the best with a total prize purse of US $10000 on offer, provided by Davidoff Cool Water.

Boss des Bosses

As old-schoolers will know, the Chamjam was born 11 years ago, when ski bums from Chamonix challenged Val d'Isere to an inter-resort bumps (the Boss des Bosses) to prove who was really the best on the mountain. The competition grew and is now fought between the two originals, plus Verbier, Zermatt and Meribel. This year it is rumoured that Courchevel might summon up the courage to enter.

In 2002, the Boss is making a comeback. It has its own dedicated day during the week and is being sponsored by the Extreme Sports Channel in association with Natives. Resort workers should check our Boss des Bosses page for details of coaches/lift passes etc.

Big Beats

Each evening will see dedicated live music and club nights in three quality venues around the town - which is almost as famous for it's off snow escapades as it is for its on snow. The atmosphere is sure to be as charged as ever, but in spite of the ever increasing media attention the essence of the event remains the same with its core values intact. DJs this year include Zero 7, Big Chill, Tummy Touch, Sancho Panza, Finger Lickin' and Jazz T. Ash will be playing live on Friday. [Check the schedule]
