25-27 February 2002

Anticipation is building in Verbier as the third Verbier Ride, now incorporating British Snow Sports Week, kicks off later this month..

The 4th annual Verbier Ride promises to be an entertaining, action-packed and friendly gathering, featuring some of the world’s best free skiers and snowboarders [Full Programme of Events]

Freeride: Weds 27 Feb, 1000 (Final from 1400)

This is the core event in any free skiing/snowboarding competition. As the name suggests this is a powerful and spectacular competition that embodies the spirit of modern free skiing.

Skiers and snowboarders begin at the 3023m summit of Verbier’s famous Mt. Gele and choose their own line of descent down the steep powder off-piste, jumping the cliffs, cornices and rock bands. Each competitor uses the natural features of the peak to ski the most fluid line, stick the most spectacular jumps and demonstrate their own style. The finish is in the La Chaux area where there will be spectator viewing, hospitality, live music, food and drink and commentary.

The forty places in the Freeride filled months ago and a strong field will include all of Britain's best freeriders including Glenn Parsons (4th last year and highest placed Brit), Jason Shott (12th) James Vernon (24th) and also Tignes-based Aussie Woodie Bouma (12th).

Big Air: Tues 26 Jan, 1400

The most popular spectator sport of the three events, this year's Big Air is off a jump specially built for the competition in La Chaux, both skiers and snowboarders will be competing to land the biggest and wildest jumps they can.

The crowd can look forward to 1080 degree twists, multiple back flips, front flips, off-axis rotations, spectacular somersaults and grabs

SkierX/BoarderX: Tues 26 Jan, 1000

The Skier/Boarder X will be staged on the internationally renowned course in Verbier’s La Chaux area. One of the first skier and boarder cross courses to be built in the world, the professionalism of Televerbier’s course construction and maintenance guarantees action and ensures safety.

The Skier/Boarder X is an adrenaline fuelled, full contact race where four skiers or snowboarders compete against each other in a specially designed course. The racecourse is packed with slalom turns, raised 1/4 pipe banked turns, rollers, moguls, tabletops and water jumps. It's the ultimate head-to-head alpine competition.
