MAIER 'WILL NOT MAKE IT TO OLYMPICS'

18 September 2001

The Austrian Ski Federation have confirmed that 'The Herminator' will definitely not be competing at Salt Lake City following his recent motorbike accident.

After an optimistic press conference which originally suggested the possibility of a return for the world champion, a further operation confirmed he will not be in condition to compete. According to AFP, after a seven hour operation last week, the surgeon who operated declared that 'there can be no debate with regard to next season'.

As for the rest of Maier's career, he was not much more optimistic. "The situation does not look good. Most of the leg muscles of the leg were damaged and there is a risk of infection. Although the operation went well, there is a chance the bone will not heal propertly...However, there is a small hope".
