The British Freestyle Ski Team continue to pound the
bumps of the international circuits and this weekend
Joanne Bromfield won the first international freestyle
medal in recent years taking Europa Cup bronze in
dual moguls in Oberstdorf, Germany.
Eighteen-year-old Joanne had a double celebration
with 5th place and a score of 21.50 points in single
moguls on Sunday, bringing her into consideration
for Olympic selection.
Although born in England, Joanne has lived in Park
City, Utah for several years due to her father's work.
She is determined to qualify for the Olympic event
which will be on her 'home slope'. Joanne will be
looking to repeat her recent success at the International
Youth Championships in the Czech Republic next month.
With two 5th places at the 2000 event, she is a strong
medal contender this year.
The young male talent of the Scottish and English
Freestyle Teams, currently training in Steamboat Colorado,
will join Joanne at the Youth Championships bringing
our total team there to 6, the largest ever British
entry.
Also competing in Oberstdorf were Simon Bates (24,
Edinburgh) and Chris David (23, Derbyshire). From
a larger male field of 47 they came joint 9th in dual
moguls on Saturday.
Simon, who is also chasing the magical 5th place
for Olympic qualification, thought he had it in his
sights with 7th in the qualification run. A mistake
on the last four bumps in the final, nearly wiping
out the finish timing, put him in 10th place with
a score of 22.21. Chris, who has just returned to
competition after a road accident, finished a creditable
27th.
The three younger team members will now have two
weeks of training in La Plagne, France with Australian
Team coach David Spiers before the Europa Cup tour
resumes.
Meanwhile the senior member of the team Sam Temple,
28, Oxford, finished the World Cup circuit in Japan
with 17th place in the only dual moguls event of the
tour. Sam has already reached Olympic qualification
level with 24th in singles and 17th in duals in the
recent World Freestyle Championships in Canada.
Finally, the remaining team member Laura Donaldson,
28, Glasgow, brought double success in Colorado two
weeks ago. On the Saturday she won the extreme series
event at Berthoud Pass, followed by first place in
the Rocky Mountain League dual moguls at Breckonridge
on Sunday. Laura will shortly be joining her team-mates
for the final Europa Cup events.
