Super Mario beats Highlander
About 50,000 spectators saw ‘Super
Mario’ Matt take the title ahead of teammate Benjamin
Raich. The bronze medal went to the leader of the strong
Slovenian team, Mitja Kunc
Britain's Alain Baxter finished
16th. After his promising so far it was a disappointment
for the 27 year old Scot, nicknamed 'the Highlander'.
A poor first run left him with
a bad start number in the second run. "I can't let it
get me down because I've got another three big races,"
said Baxter. "I was in with a chance and didn't pull
it off. A couple of beers and I'll get over it."
It's easy to forget that Baxter
started the season ranked 80th in the world. His 16th
place yesterday is Britain's second best in a World
Championship, equalling Martin Bell's in the 1987 downhill
at Crans Montana. Konrad Bartelski has the best modern
World Championship result with 15th in the 1974 downhill
at St Moritz.
The Highlander's progress this
season has been nothing short of phenomenal. Although
a top five placing remains Baxter's goal, he has one
eye on next year's Salt Lake City Winter Olympics.
This summer should see Baxter
able to focus on training full time, thanks to £30,000
of sponsorship from Drambuie, and the proceeds from
the fund raising auction
at Christie's this Tuesday.

this event can still get an invitation by contacting
