THE WORLD SKI CHAMPIONSHIPS @ ST ANTON - DAY 11

8 February 2001

Von Greuningen holds off Taiwanese to win GS title

Michael von Grüningen of Switzerland yesterday won the Men's Giant Slalom ahead of Norway's Kjetil Andre Aamodt and Frenchman, Frederic Covili.

Von Grunigen was gracious about his victory pointing to the fact that the not competing in the downhill the day before had helped. Certainly, Hermann Maier who finished in 4th by 1 thousandth of a second was not pleased with the schedule.

Maier has finished the championships not with his predicted three gold medals, but with one silver and one bronze. Whether it will see a change in his outspoken and arrogant style is another matter. Certainly there were many spectators, Austrians included, who enjoyed the schadenfreude of his failure. .

For Aamodt, it was his 15th major medal, a record for male racers. Five of them are golds.

The real star of yesterday did not come first, but last. Taiwan supplied their very own 'Eddie the Eagle' in the form of Win-Jack Pai. Full a more in-depth report, please click here.
