THE WORLD SKI CHAMPIONSHIPS @ ST ANTON - DAY 10

7 February 2001

Austrian does the double!

After yesterday's triumph in the Women's Downhill, today Hannes Trinkl completed the double for Austria by winning the Men's Downhill.

As the day before, the lesser known team member outshone the star - Trinkl pushed favourite Hermann Maier off the top spot by 0.2 of a second. Flori Eckert of Germany took the bronze medal.

The race started early so that the course could be used before the temperature rose too high. Maier has claimed the soft conditions do not suit his style and begrudgingly shook the winner's hand.

Not many Austrians will be complaining - after a slow start they now have both gold in the Blue Ribands events with plenty more possibilities in the Giant Slalom and Slalom.

[Anja Pärson from Sweden took the Gold in Women's Slalom this evening, ahead of Christelle Saioni of France and Hedda Berntsen from Norway.]
