THE WORLD SKI CHAMPIONSHIPS @ ST ANTON - DAY 9

6 February 2001

Austrians win gold at last!

To the relief and delight of the hosts, Michaela Dorfmeister of Austria snatched todayıs Womenıs Downhill title the first home Gold of the championships.

Dorfmeister, 27, held off favourite, Renate Goetschl, by 0.14 seconds on to reverse the outcome of the 1999 World Championships where Goetschl won by the same margin. Selina Heregger completed an Austrian grand slam by taking the bronze.

Kjetil Aamodt of Norway held the lead he had built up from yesterday's slalom to make history with a third consecutive Men's Combined title. Austrian's Mario Matt took silver and Swtizerland's Paul Accola bronze.

Tomorrow sees the twice delayed Men's Downhill. The course has been reset with a lower start gate and will commence at 0930 (GMT) so that racing can go ahead before the temperature can rise and the snow soften.
