The surfers have come out tops in the Pulsate Boardriderz
- the event in which surfers and snowboarders compete
in each other's discipline to find the supreme board
rider.
The winner of the
Men's event was Shaydar Edelmann, a rider who admits
he's much more at home on a surfboard than a snowboard.
But it was the snowboarding leg of the Pulsate Boardriderz
at Cardrona Alpine Resort that clinched first place
for him.
After coming second
in the surfing at St Clair beach in Dunedin on Saturday,
he needed to go hard in the Boardercross to win overall.
In the final he was trailing second behind Tom Willmot
who then crashed out, leaving Shaydar to take first
place.
Shaydar said, "Having
made it into the final I knew I'd already won overall,
but what a bonus coming first in the snowboarding."
In the Women's
event, a surfer from Christchurch, Katherine Doerr
came first overall. She'd spent a week training on
snow in Canterbury for the Boardercross in which she
came 3rd behind Cardrona Instructor, Jess Mortimer.
2nd overall was surfer, Jess Terrill from Taranaki
.
One of the greatest
achievements though was the performance of 11 year
old snowboarder, Kendall Brown from Wanaka, who, because
she was the only female Junior who entered, had to
compete in the Open Women's category. Despite facing
stiff competition from the older riders, she came
4th overall - 5th in the surfing in waves well over
her height and 5th in the boarding.
In the Junior Men's,
Felix Dickson , who's a surfer from Dunedin, battled
it out with Jah Harris, a boarder from Wanaka, for
1st place. Felix eventually won overall despite Jah
coming 1st in the snowboarding event.
All 24 riders are
eligible for spot prizes at tonight's prizegiving
and the winners will be taking home their share of
$6000 in prizemoney.
