the super-u story

Anyone who's done a season or taken a holiday to Méribel in the last couple of years will know Super-U.
No, not the cheesy supermarche on the way down to Moutiers, but one of Méribel's finest bands, founded in '98 by snowboarders and journalists Matt Barr and Chris Moran.
Unexpected as it may be, Méribel supports a pretty thriving music scene and after a couple of 'drunken and shambolic' gigs at the Rondpoint in their first season, the duo added guitarist Ewan Wallace, bassist Joe Brown and soon-to-be-legendary Ivan Boneyard as drummer and set off for France..
The debut as the new and improved Super U came in February 99 and things went so well that by the end of the season they were playing two or three times a week to a loyal and hedonistic fan base in Méribel.
Bands like Shibboleth and Too Far Gone simply weren't creating the same atmosphere - a Super-U gig ranged from the shambolic to the inspired and although not always too tight, they were never less than drunk and happy to provide a show.
In the summer of '99 Joe Brown quit the band and in August, the smokey form of Shamus King joined as new bassist, which he then proceded to learn how to play!
By February he had mastered the art, learnt how to smoke and play at the same time and was the groupies' favourite. The band continued to be popular, playing further afield, including Courchevel and St. Martin de Belleville and gained in confidence.
By the end of the season Super-U were playing at the British Champs in Mayrhofen and before the end of the season converted their room to a studio and recorded three of their original songs.
SuperU now do occassional dates around the UK (mainly in Brighton). For the latest info check their website for more details. Let the band play on!
