COLIN SLATER'S NZ UPDATE

14 May 2000

Mt Hutt was on the news last night and I was in Methven yesterday with a friend who's on snowmaking.

It's been really cold there since last weekend when it snowed and it dropped a little sprinkling more on Monday. The best thing is that the moisture content rose and it means the fallen snow is almost becoming a base, which at Hutt you need as it can get a tad windy up there. Mount Shut is something they are trying to shake as it's not that bad!

Anyway Broadway has a good base of up to 50cm of man-made and natural and most of the rest is coming online now in terms of snowmaking. Of course I managed to sneak a few runs in.

Eden is up there all night every night for the next 4 weeks to get it going...if it stays cold - fingers crossed! They're opening Queens Birthday which is June 4th all going to plan.

Concrete Peak and the Regrettables are scheduled the next week although this normally doesn't happen. Simon Cawley, ski area manager was saying they've had 800+ job applications this year for about 100 jobs - amazing!

Other issue there is that Lord of The Rings is filming in that area (actually on Mt Sunday which is near Mt Potts - awesome area) and there's another film up there as well so there's very little accomodation in Methven and it's now expensive, a bummer for seasonal workers...however I'm sure they'll cope as always...
